Five steps to help protect and improve your child/young person’s mental health and well being.

1) MAKE TIME AND BE PRESENT.

Although life can become busy and hectic, it is vital that you make regular time with your child without distractions. Do something fun together and allow them to be themselves around you.

2) TALK TO THEM. ENGAGE WITH THEM.

Allow them to express themselves and actively listen to them. Try not to interrogate them but encourage them to express themselves rather than internalise things.

3) HELP THEM TO BUILD THEIR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.

Discuss their emotions and how best to deal with certain emotions. Work on identifying and naming the emotion as well as triggers that cause them. Think carefully about words you use to describe your child and their characteristics. Be positive!

4) ENCOURAGE THEM AND BUILD THEIR CONFIDENCE.

Their confidence will build through your genuine encouragement. In anything they do, encourage them to master the technique through learning the skill and practising the skill. Practise makes you better! Provide them with the necessary skills and
resources to succeed.

5) ACCEPT THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE.

You play an important role in your child’s mental health. It is vital that you accept them for who they are but also have healthy
boundaries. Show them love and acceptance so that they don’t have to look elsewhere for it.
